tempera, canvas, 130 x 130 cm, signed and described on the back: "MAREK SOBCZYK | GÓRALKA HANKA WEDIUSZKA I WEDŁUG MONIUSZKI I WEDŁUG MASOCHA | 2004|130 x 130 cm| egg temp."
Studied painting from 1975 to 1980 in the studio of Stefan Gierowski at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In the paintings of his graduation series, their colors and mood conveyed the ugliness and trashiness of life in the block of flats, and more broadly, in Poland under real socialism. In 1983, he joined Gruppa, participating in almost all of its appearances, also co-editing its magazine "Oj dobrze już," in which he published numerous theoretical texts. In the early 1980s, he painted paintings referring to martial law. After 1989 Sobczyk's painting, while remaining figurative, became decorative and ornamental - he often repainted his old paintings in this way, giving them a new formal "costume." Since 1989
has led the School of Art project (until 2000 with Jaroslaw Modzelewski). Since 1990, he has been involved in graphic design and typography (1990-2004 with Piotr Młodożeniec in the Zafryki company).
Marek Sobczyk's paintings often provoke controversy in order to provoke the viewer to read reality anew. The artist combines a critical approach to the existing reality with an often cynical commentary.
