Toyohara Kunichika, Nighttime Cherry Blossom Viewing on a Boat, Meiji period

add Твоята бележка
Опис на артикула
An exceptionally decorative Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print depicting a kabuki actor sitting in a boat during an evening cruise beneath cherry blossoms in full bloom. The subject is dressed in a richly decorated, multicolored costume, whose vivid hues contrast with the deep black of the night sky. The gently falling sakura petals and the calm surface of the water create the atmospheric mood of one of Japan’s most distinctive traditions—hanami, or the appreciation of cherry blossoms.

In the background is a landscape featuring green hills, a riverbank, and a torii gate, which subtly alludes to the presence of a Shinto shrine. The whole piece forms a harmonious composition that blends the beauty of nature with the theatrical world of kabuki.

The artist has rendered the details of the costume, the fan, and the actor’s facial expression with extraordinary care. The characteristic inscribed cartouches contain the actor’s name and information about the role he is portraying, in keeping with the tradition of yakusha-e woodblock prints, which are dedicated to the stars of Kabuki theater.

The composition is a typical example of the work of Toyohara Kunichika, one of the most outstanding masters of late ukiyo-e. The artist became famous for his strikingly dramatic portraits of kabuki actors, in which he masterfully combined the characters’ expressions with the decorative richness of color characteristic of the Meiji period.

This work is an attractive example of late Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints and will be a valuable addition to a collection dedicated to Kabuki theater, the work of Toyohara Kunichika, and 19th-century Japanese art.

Artist: Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900) (attributed based on signature and style)
Date: Meiji period (1868–1912).

Dimensions of the woodblock prints: 37 × 22.7

Condition: good. Natural signs of aging resulting from the age of the paper and the production technique are visible but do not significantly affect the aesthetic qualities of the composition.
