Certificate ofauthenticity
Expressive and at the same time surprisingly light composition showing the figure of a woman in a red bikini against a background of a stylized seaside landscape. The work was created at a time when Buffet, known mainly for his dramatic depictions of religious and existential themes, was experimenting with freer yet predatory compositions. Graphic tension is built here by the artist's characteristic network of intersecting lines and an almost calligraphic signature.
The lithograph is from an original series from the 1960s, made by the artist in a limited edition.
Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) is a French painter and printmaker. He studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts together with Maurice Boitel and Louis Vuillemoz. His representational paintings express a mood of anxiety, and one can find in them expressive deformation of shapes defined by hard contours and dark colors.
