Leonor Fini ( 1907–1996) was one of the most important artists of the 20th century, known for her paintings, prints, book illustrations, costume designs, and set designs. She was born in Buenos Aires, grew up in Trieste, and, as a self-taught artist, studied anatomy by observing bodies in a morgue and the techniques of the Old Masters in museums.
In 1931, she moved to Paris, where she quickly gained notoriety thanks to her personality and style. Although she exhibited with the Surrealists and was friends with Dalí, Man Ray, and Max Ernst, among others, she did not consider herself part of the movement. Her art was dominated by the motif of the strong woman—often in the form of a sphinx—and by the relationship between the sexes.
She also created set designs and costumes for opera, ballet, and film, collaborating with Fellini and Huston, among others. She was a colorful, controversial figure, surrounded by the artistic community and numerous friends, and was also famous for living with two partners and many cats.
