Biography
He was of Hungarian descent. He grew up in Budapest. He was active in Paris from 1930 onward. One of the leading figures of geometric abstraction, he was a precursor of Op Art—art that employs optical illusions. Starting in the 1950s, he sought to define this movement by drafting a series of manifestos. He referred to his abstract work as “kinetic art,” striving to create the impression of movement through the effects employed in his pieces. Beginning in 1960, the artist developed the concept of a visual alphabet titled “Planetary Folklore” in his theoretical manifestos. He wanted to apply his artistic ideas to the decoration of buildings.
