The convex figure placed on the edge of the dish depicts the heroine of the fairy tale by H.C. Andersen's "Girl with Matches." The figure is huddled against a tree trunk (or wall), in which a luminous hole with a flame and star motif is visible, which alludes to the vision of the dying girl.
The products of Ipsen Keramik (active from 1843 to 1955) are prized by collectors of European ceramics for their high artistic level and unique style, combining elements of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The featured fairy tale motif is one of the label's most iconic and sought-after designs.
