[VARSAVIANA] Szwalbe Sach and Ska – Early 20th Century – Black Top Hat – Top Hat in Its Original Case – Elegance, Men’s Fashion, Fin de siècle

An elegant men’s top hat with an original case. Crafted by a Warsaw-based tailor shop specializing in custom-made luxury clothing. The top hat features a classic, tall, cylindrical shape with a slightly flared brim. The exterior is smooth, with a subtle sheen, in a deep black color. A silk ribbon runs around the base of the crown, tied in a simple knot. The brim is even, flatly contoured, with a delicately turned-up edge. The top hat comes with a rectangular cardboard case covered with black veneer, fastened with a metal clasp, and equipped with a carrying handle. Inside the top hat is a company label bearing text advertising “English suits and ready-to-wear suits, as well as custom-made suits,” along with an address on Senatorska Street in Warsaw.

The top hat is one of the most recognizable elements of men’s attire from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, serving as a symbol of elegance, social status, and membership in the urban upper classes.
The Szwalbe, Sach & Co. Tailoring Workshop was among Warsaw’s renowned establishments offering luxury clothing, both ready-to-wear and custom-made. The mention of “English coats and suits” points to inspiration from British fashion, which at that time was considered the standard of men’s elegance.
The preserved set—a top hat along with its original case—is a valuable example of the material culture of the urban elite of the Kingdom of Poland, as well as a testament to the high level of Warsaw’s tailoring craftsmanship and the luxury clothing trade prior to World War I.
