Rare quadrans of Domitian, minted in Rome in AD 84 or 85.
Roman Imperial
Domitian (81-96), Quadrans 84-85, Rome mint
Obverse: rhinoceros moving to the right
Reverse: inscription around IMP DOMIT AVG GERM, in the center of the letter SC
Weight 2.0 g
In the years 84-85 AD, the Roman Mint issued a very interesting series of the lowest denominations in the monetary system of the time, i.e. quadrans. Some of them have a bust of Minerva, princeps' favorite goddess on the obverse, and various reverse sides, some Cerera, one type of tropajon and an olive branch on the reverse, and finally some on the anepigraphic obverse of a rhino, and on the reverse either only a legend or an olive branch or an owl on an olive branch, finally SC in a wreath. Of all these types, the small SC type is the rarest.
