Biography
Julian Stręk is one of those artists who has been creating forever. Stręk's first works were created during the German occupation, when the sculptor was grazing animals and planing pipes, figurines and birds. The creator graduated from elementary school and, after finishing his education, worked at the Empty Plastics Plant. Unfortunately, while working there, he had an accident and suffered serious head injuries, which resulted in epilepsy. The event forced him to go on disability. Stręk's days after he stopped working were mainly filled with sculpting. In 1997 Stręk had another accident that left half of his body paralyzed, and shortly after this event the sculptor became seriously ill. Stręk continued to sculpt locally throughout his life - it was only towards the end of his life that his art was noticed and appreciated. Stręk's work is an unusual phenomenon on the map of Polish folk art - the artist's sculptures are economical in form, austere, hieratic, and symbolize the human figure more than they really are. Covered with multicolored polychrome, often tightly, meticulously juxtaposed, they form architectural, monumental compositions, so different from what has become established in the public's imagination when one thinks of folk sculpture.
