marble, height 18 cm ( with pedestal 24)
Signed at the bottom" Ksawery Dunikowski".
Xawery Dunikowski's works include sculptures depicting heads. This can be seen in archival photos showing the artist himself (il.1), or from an exhibition of his works (il.2). The monument "Adam Mickiewicz"( ca.1899-1906) (il.3) is an image of a literary man carved in linden wood, made in the early years of Xawery Dunikowski's work. Probably in this period was made, the presented "Head" and "Portrait of Henryk Szczyglinski" from around 1898 (Il.4).
"The sculpture betrays Dunikowski's outstanding talent. [...] the softly shaped form, operating with vast, light-sensitive planes, follows the character of the model, capturing the momentousness of the pose and that dominant trait of freedom in his manner." (Wacława Milewska, description of MN in Cracow) "Head" is a sculpture made in marble, this shows how many materials Xawery Dunikowski used. Other sculptures, also made of stone, include "Monument to the Uprising Deed"(1946-1955) (figs. 5 and 6)
