Blonde Curly Teen St. John holds his attribute, the chalice, in his right hand and presents it to the viewer. The silver chalice bears rich, baroque, gold ornaments. Behind John, near the chalice, is the head of an eagle, John's evangelistic symbol. Holy. According to iconographic tradition, John wears a green robe and a red cloak. The latter is placed over the shoulder and arm with the chalice, so that the chalice effectively stands out against the red cloak. A youthful Johannes looks out of the painting with his head slightly bowed. His blond curls voluminously frame a beautiful, young and somewhat mysterious face and give it a pleasant dynamism. According to the Legenda Aurea, the high priest of the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus gave John the choice of either sacrificing to the pagan gods or drinking a chalice of poison. John made the sign of the cross over the cup and the poison lost its effect. In the painting, the poisoned chalice becomes a chalice for the Holy Eucharist.
