Cirro Ferri was a pupil and successor of Pietro da Cortona (1596-1669) and became famous mainly as a fresco painter in Rome, Florence and Bergamo. He also worked as a sculptor and architect. The baby Jesus on the pedestal is lovingly placed by the mother on her breast. With his right hand, the child grabs his mother's breast, with his left hand he leans on Maria's forearm. Maria holds her child in a white cloth and tenderly supports her son's back and right leg. Full of tenderness, she bowed her head over the child and gives him her protection and love. This intimacy is derived from the Byzantine image type of Eleusis, the "virgin of tenderness" (virgin of tenderness), but completely reinterpreted and conceived in terms of genre. Maria is depicted in youthful, rosy-cheeked beauty, her light brown hair draped in a transparent golden veil.
