DIANA WITH THE NYMPHS
Oil on copper. Parquetted.
76 x 101 cm.
In partially gilded, ebonized frame.
Wooded landscape with water. Red deer hanging from a tree, a heron lying in front of it. In the right foreground Diana with three nymphs pointing to the rich catch of fish, for which she - identified by her crescent diadem - shows herself responsible. The theme was used by various Flemish artists, such as Gerard de la Vallée and Adriaen van Nieulandt and Jan Brueghel the Younger, in whose circle the work offered here may have been created. The depiction can also be seen as an elemental allegory of water. (14007615) (13)
