Oil on wood, 22.5 × 19cm
The half-length portrait shows an old scholar with a scroll in his hand against a neutral, cool gray background. The light falls on the bearded, gray-haired old man's head from behind and shines on his thinning hair and forehead. His big eyes look thoughtfully into the distance. As the scroll indicates, he is an ancient scholar, but lacks other attributes to identify him. It can be a philosopher or an apostle. While the face is worked out in detail, the clothing is only treated briefly. The type of picture and the style of painting are reminiscent of the pictures of scholars and old men that Rembrandt, Jan Lievens and ultimately other artists in their circle began to paint from around 1630 and thus shaped a new genre - the so-called tronies or character heads.
