Born in The Hague, the artist worked as a court painter in Stockholm from 1677. He worked as a portrait painter. Dressed in a white and pink striped dress with a floral pattern, the child has his arm around the dog on the baroque stool next to him and points to his playmate with the other hand. He wears a silk hat with a tendril pattern and fringes on its head. The sumptuous seating, the large pillar behind the child, and the heavy green curtain characterize the setting as a palace. On the right, the view goes outside, where you can see the sky and a tree. The child is wearing female clothing, but the facial features and the hat and the apparently short hair speak for a boy, as do the knee-length trousers. Boys wore girls' clothes from a young age up until the 5th or 6th year.
