Wegmayer studied from 1797 to 1805 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Johann Baptist Drechsler. In 1812 he became a professor of flower painting and successor to his teacher Drechsler. Wegmayr followed the Dutch tradition of the 17th century with his flower paintings. With the inclusion of raspberries and blueberries in the flower still life, however, he differs from the old masters in terms of motif. The flowers are in a glass vase on a stone slab. Red, pink and white tones of the flowers dominate the bouquet, the tricolored morning glory (Convolvulus tricolor) sets blue accents in between, blue-green leaves frame the light flowers.
