Marius Liugaila (1953-2013) was one of the most prominent Lithuanian graphic artists, renowned for his exceptional craftsmanship in small graphics and subtle, symbolic language of images. Born in Vilnius and educated at the Vilnius Art Institute, he created hundreds of bookplates, a large collection of engravings, drawings and illustrations, and illustrated many books. His work is dominated by surreal, metaphorical motifs, themes of the relationship between man and nature, time and existence, often conveyed through the symbolism of the female figure. Liugaila is considered one of the most professional Lithuanian printmaking technicians, whose works have been recognised internationally and have helped to strengthen the prestige of Lithuanian printmaking worldwide.
