Lot information
Otakar Cila was one of the most important Czech painters, known primarily for his oriental motifs that depict everyday life in exotic regions. The work "Indian Beggars" from 1920 is an example of his masterful art in the combination of realism and a romanticized view of the Orient. Inspired by his travels in India, Chila has depicted two figures - an older man and a younger boy - in strong daylight in front of a monumental gate, which enhances the authenticity of the scene and the emphasis on textures. This work not only presents the meticulous detailing of figures and architecture, but also speaks to the artist's interest in social issues and human stories, a key element in his work.
