Fan - composition with irises
oil, gouache, silk, dimensions illuminated 35 x 73 cm, signed p. d. "CHSzołdrska ??? Maltzan"
Fans at the turn of the 20th century were an indispensable part of a woman's outfit. In addition to their purely utilitarian character, they had a use in social communication - by arranging them properly a lady gave signs to her surroundings. They were an elegant addition to a creation, hence they were often made of expensive materials or decorated to individual order. There are well-known objects painted by Wojciech Kossak or Czeslaw Moniuszko depicting court scenes. Here, a beautiful composition on champagne silk in greens with irises, in an Art Nouveau view from the early 20th century.
