Why Reynard?Reynard was a British car manufacturer founded by Adrian Reynard in 1973, based in Bicester. They produced single-seater racing car chassis for various motorsport series, including Formula 1, Formula 2, International Formula 3000, and Formula Indy. In the late 1980s, Reynard entered the International Formula 3000 championship, achieving significant success with internationally renowned drivers such as Alex Zanardi. In 1990, Zanardi won six championships in the successful Champ Car series in America, with 156 races and 91 pole positions. Reynard declared bankruptcy in 2001, but its cars continued to compete under different names. In 2009, a new Reynard project was presented. This particular car was one of the early arrivals in Formula 3 in the 1980s, offering high performance and maximum power output for its category.
A brief overview of the Formula 3 engine development:Starting in 1974, with the maximum displacement set at 2000 cc, Italian company Novamotor achieved great success in engine preparation. Initially, Toyota engines were used, followed by Alfa Romeo, with competition from Volkswagen at a later stage. In the early 1980s, with the introduction of ground effects, British manufacturers Ralt and French manufacturer Martini dominated the scene in terms of chassis design. However, starting in the mid-1980s, after the ban on side skirts and the introduction of carbon fiber chassis, the Italian company Dallara and the British company Reynard began to establish themselves. Currently, Dallara dominates the field.
Technical regulations of Formula 3 from 1964 to 1985:From 1964 to 1970: 4-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1000 cc derived from production cars with a minimum production run of 1000 units over 12 consecutive months. Single carburetor, 26 mm restrictor plate between the carburetor and intake duct, gearbox from a production model produced in 1000 units, minimum weight of 400 kg.
From 1971 to 1973: 4-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1600 cc derived from production cars with a minimum production run of 5000 units over 12 consecutive months. 20 mm (increased to 21.5 mm in 1972) restrictor plate through which all the intake air must pass, gearbox from the same production model as the engine, allowed limited-slip differential, minimum weight of 440 kg.
From 1974: 4-cylinder engine with a displacement of 2000 cc, with the engine block and cylinder head derived from production cars with a minimum production run of 5000 units over 12 consecutive months. 24 mm diameter and 3 mm thickness restrictor plate through which all the intake air must pass, maximum rim width of 10 inches, maximum tire tread width of 8 inches, minimum weight of 455 kg. In the following years, few changes were made, mostly aimed at limiting dangerous technical developments or excessive cost increases. For example, in 1985, cars with side skirts were banned. Then, in 1997, the intake restrictor diameter was increased to 26 mm to ensure power outputs of 200 horsepower (150 kW) between 5000 and 6400 RPM. This change was made because modern chassis had become too easy to drive with the limited power provided by the 24 mm restrictor. Additionally, it was determined that the gearbox should be manual with a maximum of six gears to preempt costly experimentation. Finally, to align with higher-level categories, the minimum weight was determined with the driver on board, and to comply with homologation rules for series-derived cars, engines had to be derived from vehicles produced in 2500 units over 12 consecutive months.
The Reynard Formula 3 car was purchased new in 1987 by the Coloni racing team, which also owned a Formula 1 team. It was sponsored by Q8 and driven by their top driver Dindo Capello, who later became known for endurance races. In the first year, Capello competed in seven races with this car. Then, it was acquired by the Catella racing team from Milan, first with driver Catella and then with driver Scarpini. It later changed hands to the Antonino Famà racing team, which replaced the Alfa Novamotor engine with the current and more powerful Volkswagen Brabham engine, an evolution of the previous engine. Subsequently, it was purchased by an enthusiast in the early 1990s for non-competitive use, enjoying it for fun two or three times a year. It underwent restoration work in the late 1990s by a well-known Swiss preparer and was rarely used for demonstrations. The last time it was on the track was in Racalmuto, Agrigento, in 2018. The car is in working condition, but its fuel tank, belts, and extinguisher have expired homologations. Homologation needs to be renewed every 5 years, and since 2018, the car has not been driven. Original documents, technical passport, and documentation of races, all published in specialized magazines, are included.
