Irénée Rochard (1906-1984) - French decorative sculptor, known especially for her Art Nouveau depictions of animals, especially birds and big cats. She was born in 1906 in Villefranche sur Saône, France, to a family with artistic traditions. She studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris. In 1931, she won a gold medal at the Colonial Exhibition, and in 1938 became a member of the Society of French Artists. She worked primarily in bronze, although her works in marble, ceramic or wood are also known. She was fascinated by the world of animals, which can be seen in her works: she created very realistic sculptures for which careful observation of nature was the starting point. Many of her works were purchased by the Paris City Council and the City of New York. Rochard died in 1984 in Paris.
