It's a joint creation of siblings - brother and sister Zwack, who combined their hobbies; a love of Tokaj wines and a passion for spice composition to create a high-value, uniquely flavored beverage. Unicum is an Austro-Hungarian liquor with a very long history. Its first taster is said to have been Emperor Joseph II Habsburg, for whom it was created by his court medic Zwack, in 1790. Originally, therefore, it was a medicinal liquor, appreciated in the fight against digestive ailments, but even modern Hungarians claim that it is a "cure-all" and recommend drinking a glass after a meal to aid digestion. However, it is also often served as an aperitif, in which case it helps stimulate the appetite and sharpen the taste buds.
