Alberto Giacometti ( 1901–1966) was a Swiss sculptor, painter, and printmaker, and one of the most important artists of the 20th century. He came from an artistic family—his father was the painter Giovanni Giacometti. In 1922, he moved to Paris, where he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière under Antoine Bourdelle. In his early years, he was interested in Cubism and Surrealism, but it was his later, ascetic depictions of the human form—elongated figures, busts, and heads—that brought him the greatest recognition, becoming one of the most distinctive hallmarks of postwar art. He also created drawings, paintings, and prints in which—as in his sculptures—the motifs of the face, the gaze, solitude, and the fragile human presence in space recurred.
