Josef Liesler (1912-2005) , The Backstage Rehearsal

This 1960 gouache is a sophisticated example of Josef Liesler’s interest in theatricality and the human figure. The composition is centered around two prominent silhouettes in deep blue, positioned as if in a moment of dialogue or performance. In the background, fragmented elements—including a framed portrait and architectural lines—suggest an artist's studio or a theater backstage.
Liesler’s mastery of the medium is evident in the vibrant contrast between the bold primary colors and the atmospheric grey background. Through a graphic, almost semi-abstract lens, the artist captures a sense of modern mystery and rhythmic movement. This work is a significant testament to Liesler's ability to transform a figurative scene into a complex, multi-layered narrative of mid-century modernism. Gouache on paper. 44 x 61 cm .
