Representative portrait of an unknown doctor, depicted in dark medical or academic clothing. In the left part of the composition, there is a statue of the god Asclepius with a staff wrapped around a snake - a classic symbol of medicine, which underlines the professional career of the person depicted.The author of the painting is Antonín Machek (1775-1844), an important portrait painter of the classicism period. The work was published in the author's monograph: L. Novák: Antonín Machek, Prague 1962, cat. C. 113, fig. C. 89.
The portrait bears the hallmarks of Machko's refined style - an emphasis on character fidelity, fine modeling handwriting and compositional balance with iconographic references to the profession of the depicted personality.
