Russia, Catherine II (1762–1796). Silver medal from 1774 commemorating the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca with the Ottoman Empire. By I. G. Jaeger and Gass.
Very rare original strike. The medal commemorates the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca, concluded on July 21, 1774, which ended the Russo-Turkish War of 1768–1774 and significantly expanded Russian influence in the Black Sea region.
The obverse features a portrait of Catherine II. The reverse depicts Minerva, goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare, standing on the Ottoman shore and pointing with the caduceus toward a Russian warship. The design highlights the decisive role of the Russian fleet in the war against the Ottoman Empire, as well as the Russian position on the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea—consolidated by the peace treaty—and the resulting expanded trade opportunities toward the Mediterranean.
An exceptionally rare and impressive large-format historical silver medal with an attractive antique patina and an exceptionally appealing overall appearance. Very fine to excellent.
