Augustinas Savickas (1919-2012) was a renowned Lithuanian painter and teacher, considered one of the most important creators of modern Lithuanian painting in the second half of the 20th century. He was awarded the National Prize for Culture and Art and worked for many years as a professor at the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
His paintings are characterised by expressive, deformed figures, strong emotions, dramatic compositions and vivid colours. His works often reflect biblical, historical and mythological themes, as well as portraits and human figures. Savickas's work is characterised by inner tension and existential drama, and some of his works reflect the painful experiences of the 20th century, such as war and the Holocaust.
His work combined modernist artistic freedom with deep humanist ideas. In addition to painting, Augustinas Savickas was also an important pedagogue, who greatly influenced many generations of Lithuanian painters.
