Bronze issue of Messana in Sicily, dated to approximately 411–408 BC, was struck during a period of significant political changes on the island amid the Peloponnesian War and the rivalry among the Greek poleis of Sicily.
Messana, situated at the strait separating Sicily from Italy, was one of the most important ports of the region and played a key role in controlling navigation through the Strait of Messina. The city is widely attested in ancient sources, including Thucydides and Diodorus Siculus, as a major strategic and commercial center.
