Graphic according to the painting of the same title, from the series The Martyrdom of the Apostles - 16 monumental (approx. 4 × 3 m) canvases forming the main part of the furnishings of the Cistercian monastery church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist in Lubiaz. Today the painting is in the parish church of St. Stanislaus Kostka in Zoliborz. Very rare.
Michael Willmann (1630-1706), known primarily as an outstanding painter of the Silesian Baroque, was less active in the field of printmaking. Although his main means of expression were oil paintings and frescoes, Willmann also created drawings that formed the basis for copperplates made by other artists, and occasionally made graphic attempts himself. Willmann rarely engraved in copper independently. He is credited with a small number of experimental works, which are characterized by a more painterly, freehand treatment of the matrix, reminiscent of a drawing sketch rather than a precise copperplate.
