Biography:
Born May 21, 1925 in Częstochowa, died August 14, 2022 in Konstancin-Jeziorna.
Painter, illustrator. Outstanding representative of the contemporary avant-garde of painting, referred to as a classic of Polish modernity.
Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under Zbigniew Pronaszko and Karol Frycz. From 1962 to 1996, he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. From 1975 to 1981 he served as dean of the Faculty of Painting. In 1956-1961 he cooperated with the Crooked Circle Gallery run by Marian Bogusz. In 1981, he was a member of the Organizing Committee of the Congress of Polish Culture.
In the second half of the 1950s, he moved away from figurative painting toward abstraction. He does not give his works titles, but calls them Paintings and numbers them with Roman numerals. His paintings are inspired by informel-type abstraction, unionism and post-constructivist art, but they cannot be fully categorized as belonging to any of these styles. He is also referred to as a continuator of the school of colorism, thanks to his sophisticated play of textures and colors. In the 1960s, his work moved closer to visualist directions, while in the 1970s he paid more attention to the interplay of color fields. In the 1980s, this was augmented by a search for artistic forms that could fulfill the functions of verbal concepts in his works (Painting the Ten Commandments, 1986).
He is the recipient of the Jan Cybis Prize awarded to painters for lifetime achievement (1980) and the Kazimierz Ostrowski Prize for outstanding achievement in painting (2005). In 1997 he was awarded the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1997). In 2005, he was awarded the Gloria Artis Gold Medal for Merit to Culture.
