Adam Setkowicz was born in Krakow in 1875, where he spent his entire life. He studied painting at the local School of Fine Arts from 1891 to 1894. He was a student of Florian Cynk, under whose tutelage he explored the secrets of drawing, while under Jan Matejko he informally studied composition. In late 1897/98, he studied pastel painting in the studio of Theodor Axentowicz. Setkowicz was an extremely prolific artist. He was very successful in easel painting. His interests included genre painting: the Podkraki landscape, idylls, orchards, winter and summer hunting scenes, religious themes, patriotic themes, illustrations to literature, still lifes painted in oil or watercolor, in which he was a true master. He created more than 2,000 paintings. In addition, he designed invitations, postcards, calendars, books for which he created vignettes and illustrations, developed illustrations for short stories, novels and even courtroom events, designed and developed board games, drawing and painting patterns, and even created a puppet theater with designed puppets and scenery.
