Steeped in Iberian culture and tradition, Salvador Dali ( 1904 -1989), the famous Surrealist painter, could not leave out references to wine in his works. In fact, he was fond of wine himself, expressing this in his famous cookbook ( more gastronomic) Les Diners de Gala ( Diners of Gala ), first published in 1973.
5 years after the release of the cookbook After Les Diners de Gala, Salvador decided to try his hand at the culinary world once again. The result is the book The Wines of Gala.
Dali believed that a true connoisseur does not drink wine, but tastes its secrets, experiences the deep sensations that wine creates.
Salvador Dalí's composition entitled "Wines of Gala" is part of a series of illustrations created for the book "The Wines of Gala" (originally "Les Vins de Gala"), published in 1977. The book is a tribute to wine and was written by Dalí, with inspiration from his wife Gala, whose name appears in the title. The illustrations for the book depict surreal visions related to wine, full of the fantasy and sensuality that are characteristic of Dalí's work.
In one of these compositions we see a white cat with different colored eyes - one blue and the other yellow. The cat is the centerpiece of the scene, symbolizing independence, mystery and sensuality and its long, elegant mustache provides an unusual focal point from which the women sip wine. It's a surreal representation of extravagance and luxury, as well as sensuality and decadence.
Dalí uses precise lines and rich colors in this composition, which is characteristic of his style. His realistic approach to depicting surreal scenes creates a strong contrast that makes the painting both believable and fantastic.
The entire "Wines of Gala" series is a tribute to the hedonism and pleasures of wine tasting. Dalí's illustrations, including a composition with a white cat, bring the viewer into a world where the boundaries between reality and fantasy are fluid. Dalí uses his mastery of surreal imagery to convey the essence of luxury, sensuality and extravagance associated with the culture of wine drinking.
Dali believed that a true connoisseur does not drink wine, but tastes its secrets, experiencing the deep sensations that wine creates.
With this composition, Dalí invites the viewer to immerse himself in the extraordinary world of his imagination, where each scene is full of deeper meanings and surprising details that provoke reflection and admiration.
