Franciszek Smuglewicz (1745-1807) was one of the most prominent Lithuanian and Polish classicist painters, a founder of the Vilnius School of Art. Born in Warsaw, he studied in Rome, where he developed his classicist style.
Franciszek Smuglevičius in Rome (c. 1774-1776) repainted discovered frescoes, their fragments and interiors, and created drawings (some of them together with the architect Vincenzo Brenna), in total 59 versions of murals. Of these, 34 are by him alone, 20 with Brenna and 5 by Brenna himself. These drawings were later engraved in the etching technique by the Italian printmaker Marco Carloni and an album was published in 1776. The album has become an important bibliographical rarity in Europe, with colour and black-and-white versions held in museums in libraries around the world (National Museum in Warsaw, Albertina in Vienna, Windsor Castle, Hermitage Museum, etc.).
